What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a popular Korean martial art developed from other martial art styles including Karate and Taekkyeon in the 1940's and 1950's. Taekwondo stands out from other styles by it's emphasis on powerful kicking techniques. The name Taekwondo literally translates as the art of hand and foot fighting.
Tae = To jump, kick or smash with the foot
Kwon = To punch or destroy with the hand or fist
Do = art, way or method

Since the 2000 Olympic games, Taekwondo sparring has been a full medal sport. This form of Taekwondo challenges participants to beat their opponent by scoring points using a range of Taekwondo techniques. The points awarded vary depending on the kick and the striking area.

Aside from the skills you learn, Taekwondo is a great opportunity to get fit and take part in exercise. There are plenty of Taekwondo clubs across the country and each one will do things differently, so you're sure to find one to suit your goals.
